It’s not easy to see elephants in Ghana but it can be done and it is truly an amazing experience. Since Pam was with me for the last two weeks (July 8-22) we decided to make a mom/daughter memory and drive up north to Mole (molay) National Park to see wild elephants and other animals.
The trip is long and not easy. The roads are poor and it’s hard on cars. I called ‘Johnny’ my Ghanaian friend and driver and we were off. We took 5 days to make the trip stopping in Kumasi both directions and seeing some sights on the way. The actual driving time from Tema was about 13ish hours. Anyone who has gone to Mole will tell you it’s that last 2 ½ hours that are the killer. Basically it’s ---kilometers of huge potholes with a little bit of road thrown in.

When you arrive and are greeted by a baboon or a warthog and look out onto elephants grazing below your hotel room, it’s all worth it. We were even lucky enough to have a guide take just the two of us at dawn to a village where we got to see the wildlife mesh with the village life. At one point the school children were walking in a line to go to school and they had to stop and wait while the elephants passed. Behind a house a baboon tasted a woman’s pot of something she had cooking. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.
